The Special Traits Of Supernatural Thriller Books

By Donna Gibson

Every genre of books have certain characteristics that both readers and writers can identify. This lets them know what to expect in that genre. Though it is a different genre, supernatural thriller books combine the characteristics of two genres that give them an extra excitement. This often leads to many loyal followers.

As a thriller, these books give a feeling of suspense and excitement. There is also an element of anxiety. As a supernatural genre, special plot aspects lead the reader to believe in the contradictions in expectations of the natural world. It is a speculative genre, and requires a certain amount of creativeness to suspend one's disbelief in the natural things.

Man has always been involved in storytelling, for the attention of the audience for the storyteller and for the thrill of being helped to understand the world beyond the scope of their senses. The thriller genre is the perfect genre to fulfill both of these, helping to resolve their fears of the strange and unexplained and to fascinate, whether presented orally on in writing.

The conflict of two main characters, one with a special power, is typical of this genre. Earlier tales are great examples, with a main character battling a lesser character with special powers. The heroic character always comes out as the leader. Though only told orally, this type tale with the thriller traits keep the listener interested in the saga to the very end.

Early tales written for enjoyment involved the supernatural as well. This propelled the story forward for its readers. It was a case of man against the supernatural, with man winning most of the time. Ghosts, witches, and curses kept the reader on the edge of their seat while reading, becoming motivated to follow the character and gain insight into their actions.

Gothic tales were a natural progression from the early stories. This resulted in tales such as that Frankenstein, as well as the Henry James and Edgar Allen Poe tales. This often left the reader to wonder if the character was insane, or if they were under the power of a dark force. This often led to the fear of it happening to them. This made the tale more appealing.

Tales of shape-shifters and other unnatural characters naturally evolved from the tales of this genre. These characters had a strong visual image, making them great for adapting for television and the movies. Though the viewer is asked to suspend their disbelief about these things, directors know how to handle this and still tell a believable tale. They make use of the viewers ability to suspend disbelief and get a thrill and excitement.

A large number of authors have adopted this genre, but they don't replace the old authors. Many people enjoy those old tales today, even while enjoying newer authors. Writing instructors suggest studying those old tales to gain knowledge of the techniques used by them. It is a very difficult genre to write, but is well enjoyed by readers. Good writers in the genre never fail to direct the reader in suspending their disbelief.
