Create Your Own Success Writing

By Rebecca Lane

Press releases and sales letters are easily considered the business card in today's professional world. And sadly, very few business owners understand the importance of improving their own writing skills to push their businesses forward.

Few people realize that the written materials they send to clients can make or break their business. A poorly written press release, for example, leaves the lasting impression that you are nothing more than an amateur, while a well written piece gives them the feeling they are dealing with the best in the field. You can utilize these marketing techniques if you follow a few simple rules.

Your first step should be to consider your niche market. Who are these people to whom you are sending your materials? What will lure and keep their interest? Use clear and concise words to detail your product or services, but do not treat your clients as though they cannot understand simple examples. Avoid using keywords that are used in the field but are largely unknown anywhere else.

Second, determine what makes your business unique to your niche market. If you are sending a press release to newspapers and magazines, then you should definitely try to emphasize the business end of things. If you are sending a press release to a magazine for women, emphasize how your product can help women. It is even more helpful if you research the type of audience a particular medium has before you submit to them. Most editors will not waste their time with your press release if it does not have an impact on their readers.

Next in the order of importance is to make your materials interesting enough that people will want to read them. Given that most people receive daily junk in their mail boxes, both physical and virtual, many materials get trashed or deleted as soon as they are seen, unless they can immediately trigger one's interest. Crafting your press release using interesting fonts and nice, attractive designs, can truly give it a chance to survive and be noticed. Include the logo of your company, and if you have a freebie to offer, throw it in as well. And if you really want to go the extra mile, you can also create an envelope your client will easily be attracted to.

As you final step, do ensure that nothing gets sent out until you have had a chance to proofread and edit. Errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling, tell a tale of a low level of professionalism. Allow someone else to read your material before you send it as they will have a fresh perspective and may be able to clean up your letter or release for you.

Remember to not be overwhelmed by that evasive sales letter or press release. Following these tips will get you on the right path to use these valuable marketing tools. As you continue practicing, sending out materials that meet the needs of your clients is going to be increasingly easier. In no time at all, you will be qualified to shine over your competitors. Start today enhancing your writing skills so you can begin marketing with this low-cost but effective technique.
