By Katrina Wheeler

The road to success for award winning authors is not a simple one. Anyone aiming to be in this number needs to be prepared to work extremely hard and rise over rejection. These tips are a great starting point to help you achieve those goals.

Writing skills are like any muscle in your body, they need to be trained and conditioned to avoid pain. Any successful athlete will tell you that they train all the time and that strength building contributes to their wins. Similarly, any writer should train their skills to improve their abilities. This will ultimately lead to quality content that deserves praise.

With so many methods and techniques available, it is incredibly important to take the time to learn more about your craft. This valuable information is easily acquired through attending classes, courses and seminars. While many of these are paid for, there are also free community and online courses available. This is a great opportunity to receive feedback on your writing, be introduced to a variety of tones and acquire methods that will work best for your style.

While exposing your work to the world is not an easy task, its vital for success. When deciding to publish with a big publisher, remember that the process is somewhat out of your hands. So, make sure you choose a publisher and editor that you trust and who shares your vision. They should be constructive, open and encouraging.

If you aren't comfortable with big business, consider choosing self-publishing as an option. There are quite a few platforms available that make this a viable option, particularly if you are an emerging writer. Self-publication basically cuts out the middle man. Thus placing the responsibility for all production aspects on the author. This means you write, edit, design and control all distribution aspects of the work.

Rejection is a reality in this industry. As demoralizing as this many be, find a way to deal with rejection. Any author will tell you that they received many rejection letters before they finally got an acceptance. This is a rite of passage, part of the process for anyone looking to succeed. Anyone putting their literature out there needs to build that thick skin and persevere. The important thing is to keep trying.

Writing competitions are everywhere. Some are free, some not. Either way, you should try to enter as many competitions as you can. It's a terrific opportunity to get your work read by other people, particularly those active in the industry. A lot of the times, competition judges are writers, editors or publishers. This will potentially get you the access you would not ordinarily have, especially since finalists are often provided with valuable feedback and constructive criticism for growth purposes.

Anyone looking to enter the ranks of award winning authors, needs to be willing to put in some very work and prepare for various failures along the road. They also need to make room for some serious luck, which also plays a role. Success is a combination of hard work and timing. Being ready, at the right place, just in time.
