With Help From Green Architects Washington DC Developers Can Help Save The Environment

By Richard Reynolds

The destructive and selfish behaviour of mankind have resulted in a situation where the planet is now struggling to sustain the many demands made upon it. Environmental experts and activists have long warned that drastic action is necessary from every single person on this earth. If this is not done the planet will no longer be able to support life as we know it. Some are taking action. For example, by employing green architects Washington DC and Charlottesville VA developers now built structures that require less resources.

Much research have been conducted and new technologies and techniques have been developed to lessen the impact that the construction and maintenance of buildings have on the environment. There are numerous benefits in using environmentally friendly building techniques. In fact, a new generation of designers that focus on sustainable architecture is now fashionable and indeed very necessary. Even existing buildings can be converted to make better use of resources.

It is with very good reason that the construction industry is so important in the effort to rescue the earth. The construction and maintenance of buildings consume vast amounts of resources. For example, fifteen per cent of all fresh water available to man is used in constructing and maintaining buildings. Almost half of all the raw materials mined from the soil is used in the construction industry. More than half the waste found in landfill sites originates from construction and building maintenance activities.

Much can be done to limit the amount of natural resources consumed by buildings. Modern designers specify the use of recycled materials for the construction process. Waste from demolished buildings can be salvaged for use in new construction projects, thus limiting the impact upon landfill sites. Where possible, materials such as bamboo that can be rapidly replenished is used. In the process the consumption of other scare resources, such as water, is also limited.

Enormous amounts of energy is used to heat, cool and ventilate buildings. It is no wonder that sustainable architecture closely focuses on these systems. Buildings are now designed to make use of natural air flow channels to provide ventilation. The effective use of recycled insulation materials result in buildings that require much less energy for heating and cooling purposes.

Buildings consume more than half of the energy generated. Of course, the generation of energy requires the use of scarce resources and the process almost always generates pollution. It is no wonder that sustainable architecture places a high priority on the use of alternative energy sources. Modern buildings now make use of sophisticated solar and wind energy systems. Even building materials that act as passive solar systems can help reduce the energy needs of a building.

Attention is also paid to methods of limiting the waste generated by a building. Recycled materials are used wherever possible. Grey water is not wasted by used again. By using bio degradable materials and products the pressure on landfill sites can be considerably lessened. Anything that can be used again, even for a different purpose is removed from the waste.

Sustainable architecture can do much to help lessen the negative impact that mankind has on the environment. Environmentally friendly buildings are not only kind to the environment, but they are also healthier. It is a sacred duty of every developer to limit the use of non renewable resources wherever possible.
