Features Of African American Christian Fiction Novels

By Richard Barnes

Many different authors are differentiated on their styles of writing. They sell themselves through the writings they pile in their books. To make a good writer who has the market, you need to know the kind of books to write and their required contents. Failure to that, your writing will lack meaning. The following are characteristics of African American Christian fiction novels.

Bases romance in more than physical attraction. The process through which two actors come to fall in love through romance is portrayed as more than the physical appearance of the individuals. They should show other factors that brought about romance other than beauty and physical qualities of the involved parties. These other factors should include those that lie within the heart and mind of people especially salvation, love for everyone and a good heart with a strong personality.

Do not base their stories on revenge and violence. Revenge seeks to do bad to a person believed to hurt another one. Revenge is a sin as it encourages bad actions. Violence, on the other hand, is also ungodly because it inflicts pain, misery and suffers to those believed as enemies. God discourages actions leading to violence and pouring of blood. Hence as an author of such books, you need to avoid the basis of revenge or violence or use of scenes that portray potentiality of the two.

Lack sexual sin glamour. They need not glorify sexual sin at all. The Bible categorically differentiates that the act of sexual sin is not only the sin but also seeing and thinking of it is a sin. When the author takes time to sit down and reflect on how to portray a certain sexual sin scene in their book, they think and hence commuting the sin itself.

Do not use profanity. Profanity is evil and satanic. The author who uses abusive language and a bad word in writing a Christian fiction lacks the morality in them. People write what they are and a writer who uses profanity in their work are themselves profane. You cannot pass what you do not have to people, the same way a writer cannot write what is not in themselves. Therefore the use of profanity shows the author is a non-believer hence mockery to believers.

Actors who are believers act in integrity or suffer the consequences. Many authors fail to show the consequences of actors who fail to follow integrity. They show them as winners. They are portrayed as honest people who compromise their personalities. After this compromise, they are maybe forgiven, but the action is not reversible which is wrong. They should show believers being rewarded by maintaining their faith and not else.

They have a Christian message. At the end of every novel, it should point out the message that a person is to learn after reading it. Even before the end of a book, the reader should be able to know the lesson. And this lesson is based on moral teachings as dictated by the Bible.

It has a biblical basis. As a book meant to shape the lives of those who believe in the Bible, it requires a basis that automatically shows its source. It is not to portray different backgrounds of information to avoid confusion to the readers. The basis helps in avoiding misleading messages.
