The Dear Church Secretaries Are No Longer That Word

By Honorary Rabbi Jo

Churches are more dangerous than you might think . People yell, and behave badly , and throw things. Not always, only if you say 'secretary' when we all know there is no longer any such thing. It seems the secretaries flew off with 'stewardess' . Say the "S-word" and they hesitate for a moment , giving you the opportunity to light candles and plead forgiveness. But overlook this nanosecond and Jesus will have to step out for a few moments. your 'Admin' which we all know mean Administrative Assistant, which is short for, "You cannot even imagine how important I am."

This Is The Secretary Helen

As a pastor of 30 years you mark certain times when time stand still. Like when you say , "Cool" but what you really meant was , "Epic." or when there's a new staff position open . When the church had 50 members you could remember the secretary's name - wife. Secretary number two was Helen, she said this was a ministry . She handled everything. Those Usher pin badges came from her; Sunday School teachers got their colored felt from her. She was your secretary for 20 years, but as her age increased so did the church size and scope. Ultimately we needed another staffer. You would soon realize another of those ministry changing moments, once again built around the correct term .

The Best Person For The Job

The new person really was the just the person we needed, and even though she spent the first week trying to locate the camouflaged Bible-shaped wall safe where Helen hid the Standard Annual Treasurer's Record Book she has worked out fabulously. However, this one wanted a job description. She was a female not a woman , and she was only my secretary once. I made that error introducing her to a pastor friend, "This is my new secretary Kelley." She politely but painfully pronouncing syllable by syllable said, "Yes, I am the new Administrative Assistant ." We never discussed it afterward; we never had to, Kelley is not a secretary, she is an Admin.

A lot has grown in over 30 something years of ministry. I'm sure more is coming . I told my wife recently, at 60 I am going to start a mid-life crisis. By then I will have earned one just from trying to catch up with the newest slang, no wait - nomenclature, no wait - verbiage.
