The Beginners Short Tutorial on Copywriting

By Dr. Jay Host

Creating effective copy for your website is not as difficult as people make it out to be. If you've done your homework and know where you're going, you can score good copy even if you've got little experience in the writing field. However, there are a few points that you should always keep in mind when you're starting off with copywriting, especially as a non-writer.

One of the most important concepts in copywriting is the benefits of whatever it is you are selling. The classic beginner mistake is to automatically latch onto the idea of a feature - and that is not the same as a benefit. The main point about benefits is they bridge the connection between the features and the emotional and logical understanding in a person's brain. Any copy absent of benefits for the customer always under-performs because they do not immediately see why they should buy it. It is the benefits that will always be the focal point of your copy, and all else really will serve to support that. This is the only way you'll be able to convince your prospects about your offer.

You will spend many days writing some kind of copy, and then you will publish it only to discover it falls flat on its face. This is why it's important that you go ahead and ask for feedback from your friends and other people.

This will allow you to expand your horizons and understand if there's something that you need to change. Any time you have a chance to improve what you write, that is exactly what you need to be doing. Actually, we think it is best to get the opinions of people who know what they are doing because they know what to look for in copy. You can always join forums that have a copywriting section and ask people to critique your copy.

There is nothing worse than being motivated to write, and you are trying to write but some external distraction is really vying for your time and attention. However, if you want the end result to be appealing to your target audience then stop dividing your focus on multiple things and keep your audience in mind when carving out your copy. Quite obviously you must find a way to write so your copy can be as strong as it has to be.

Remember that copywriting is one of the most valuable skills you can learn as a small online business owner.
