Publish Your Own Work Through Personal Book Printing

By Elba McGee

Those who want to publish their own work shall have to think of plenty of things before they can make it happen. For starters, the cost of book printing can go beyond budget if one is not careful. Then there is the layout to worry about. Will the printer accept the format and produce it exactly as you imagined or will it be reader friendly or will it look cheap because of cost efficiency. In the end it is all about trying to publish at the lowest possible cost without sacrificing quality.

One key advice for self publication is to keep things simple but not too simple. For starters, consider the design element. Not all printers are capable of replicating all designs, so you have to keep this in mind when designing covers and page layout. Next, you do not want to overtly complicate designs such that readers will get turned off. Finally, you must keep the page size suitable for online publication as well. Choose either the 6 by 8 inch format or the 5 and 3/8 by 8 and 3/8th inch format.

Another important thing is preparing a proper paper type for your self-publication. Taking out your writing on a low cost paper will only come back to haunt you because people perceive poor paper quality as a sign of bad writing. Then again, trying to go expensive will cost you money and make your books heavier for shipping cheap.

One major issue with self-publication is the page count. Thinking that by adding more blank sheets you can achieve something is a wrong idea. Folks seldom use them and they cost you extra money to add blank pages. Moreover, it increases weight of the book and to remove then later on you have to pay an additional price. Ultimately, your total page count will affect your overall print price.

What you also have to consider with self publication is the image area. This is the region that will accommodate most of your writing on page. Leaving out margins to the sides, bottom, and top ensures that nothing gets out of line. This is very important when you are using an old press machine because they do not discriminate between an improper paper feed and a properly aligned feed.

For color based book-printing try to stick with CMYK print machines. This is the most affordable and consistent color print machine you shall find and as long as you try to stay away from florescent, metallic, and bright colors, it should work fine.

CMYK print is great as long as you stay within four colors or less. Regardless of whether you are preparing for the cover, page or just testing out text colors, try not to continuously change out color Pantones because this costs a lot. Also, once you settle on the colors, keep them in place until all the print work is over.

Above all, do not make an attempt to publish your book without first talking with a few online bookstores or local stores. Without a proper market, book printing can be a very harrowing and expensive venture.
