Web Writing Tips - What Mistakes To Avoid

By Reed Slidell

Web writing is now a hot career. A lot of people-both working in the corporate world and not-are into writing for the internet. It's comparatively easy than other online jobs particularly SEO article writing for those who have the knack for being word mercenaries. Besides, web writing tips abound everywhere so even the first-timers will not remain clueless on how to get the job done. In the following, instead of talking more how-to tips, we will talk about the common mistakes you should not commit when writing web content.

The use of business speak. Business speak refers to business lingo. You know, words which only entrepreneurs and marketers understand. Common readers can't appreciate them because they're not used in everyday conversation, so, don't try to sound smart by using them. To play safe, always use natural language that everyone would understand. You can still sound prudent without having to use jargons in web content creation anyway. In fact, the simpler and clearer you write, the better for your career.

The magnification of features. It's pretty common that articles on web writing tips will advice writers to talk about the features of what they are writing about. This is in hope that readers will get enticed by the features. However, there's something that can be more enticing than mere features. You know what it is? Benefits! See, if you tell people the advantages of opting for what you're offering over the others, they will have a clearer idea on why they must choose you. Hence, stop wasting space on features.

The writing for the wrong audience. Yes, you can write for the wrong audience. When this happens, your articles can't be as effective as they can be. So, before starting anything, it is imperative that you know who you are writing for. This will give you a good idea of what words and tone to use. You would not talk to female adults the same way as you would to male teenagers, right? Hence, you must know exactly who your target audience is in your online business today.

Writing too much. Many writers think that the more words they write, the smarter they appear. But, this style doesn't work among the online public. This is because they are never fond of reading lengthy write-ups. They only have patience to go through 200 to 500-word long articles. Anything higher can already be taxing. Thus, as a writer, it is your job to provide the information they need in the most concise and comprehensible way possible.

Publishing before proofreading. This sounds a stupid mistake but sadly, a significant number of writers still err on this. They click the "publish" button without even ensuring that all the words are spelled correctly. Consequently, their reputations get hurt by their seemingly minor slip-ups. The truth is, all the lists of web writing tips must emphasize the necessity of proofreading. It doesn't only make your articles look better but your repute a lot higher too.
