There are a number of options for treatment for dyslexia Carlsbad residents need to know if they are struggling with the condition.

Parents and guardians and teachers are often the first to notice the problem. It is important that the child is taken through professional evaluation to confirm the diagnosis. This is usually done by a psychologist or a child psychiatrist. The process of diagnosis will focus on areas such as family history, reading comprehension, fluency, phonological processing, intelligence and vocabulary knowledge among others.

Since the condition is usually associated with a structural problem of the brain, correcting it is virtually impossible. It is considered a lifelong condition among those affected. However, there are a number of things that can be done to improve the quality of life of the affected individual. Early diagnosis, is important if any of these interventions are to make a difference.

Children that have been confirmed to be suffering from dyslexia need to be enrolled in institutions that are responsive to their special needs. Such institutions will allow them ample time to learn. They also need to be assisted to make maximum use of all their senses in the process of learning. Using recorded lessons is one of the strategies that which have been shown to be quite effective. The lessons help them to use their sense of hearing and can replayed many times over.

Social support is key to the success of all forms of intervention. It is important to remember that these children are often the subjects of ridicule from their peers due to their slow learning ability. Making them believe in themselves and raising their self esteem will help counter this negative energy. Let them understood that the condition is in no way a failure of their making.

Apart from providing the much needed support, parents can also be quite instrumental in facilitating learning actively. Parents should strive to read to their children loudly as often as possible. This should start as soon as a diagnosis has been made. If they can access any recorded books, the same should be availed to the child so that they can start listening to them. Reading time should be created both for the child and the parent so that the latter serves as an example.

Most adults that have lived with dyslexia since childhood have learned ways of coping. Many of them can read albeit with some difficulties. Amnesia or memory loss is common presentation among adults. While some may struggle with low self esteem and shame, many others lead normal or near normal lives in spite of this disability. This is in contrast, to children whose main issue is reading.

Dyslexia does not present in the same way in all persons affected. Some have mild symptoms and others have more dramatic ones that negatively impact their lives. However, it is worth noting that the condition does not interfere with the intelligence of the individual. Many persons with the problem have a level intelligence that compares quite well to that of their peers and may be even better.
