How Top Article Marketers Ensure Success

By Marion Newman

Would you be surprised to learn that nearly every successful website owner is heavily engaged in an ongoing article marketing campaign?

There are two essential components for a successful website: good content and lots of visitors. Website traffic can originate from numerous sources; blogs, links on other websites Google adwords, email blasts, direct (postal) mail...even radio, TV and billboard advertising. But, without a doubt, the best traffic comes from organic listings in Google, Yahoo, Bing, and the lesser search engines.

Although it can take substantial time and concerted effort to build and optimize a website that will rank well, the subsequent traffic a site receives from the search engines is both free and extremely valuable. If you advertise online, it may cost you up to $10 or more to generate a single visit to your site. Years of marketing research has clearly shown that visitors who reach your site because they found it after searching in Google or Yahoo are far more likely to be prepared to buy than those who reach you as a result of advertising. The "conversion" of visitors to buyers is dramatically higher for the first group.

It's common sense. The person who reaches your site after clicking on a link of some kind or opening a promotional email may or may not have much interest about what your site offers. The person who puts forth the effort to conduct a search to get to a site like yours is far more likely to be a good prospect for whatever the site offers.

That's why it's easy to understand why experienced website owners spend substantial time and energy working to boost their search engine rankings. And, because obtaining links is essential to achieving such rankings, site owners are universally engaged in ongoing link building campaigns. In nearly every case, article marketing is an important component of their campaigns because no other activity can be relied on to produce as many links as quickly. A well received article can get you dozens of links almost immediately and in excess of 1,000 links in a few short weeks.

Eight out of ten website owners write about subjects closely related to the subject of their sites. It's what the gurus advise them to do, and for good reason: links in relevant articles may carry greater weight with the search engines.

But, what many marketers do not understand is that it is a serious mistake to limit their articles to topics closely related to their website content.

That's because by writing only on a limited range of topics, you will be limiting the websites and directories which will consider carrying your writings. Choosing a wider range of topics will get you a far better return. I have about a half dozen education sites, thus my articles are frequently about college selection, financial aid , online degree programs, and similar topics. I've managed to obtain thousands of links with these articles, but there are lots of article directories, blogs, and websites that have absolutely no interest education-related articles. So, I also write 200 articles a year on other topics, in order to reach out to an entirely new audience, and garner a far greater number of links to my sites.

I recently wrote an article on how to win sports bets with friends. My other article topics include website marketing, home buying tips, pet training tips, gardening tips, and scores of other topics. My most widely published article...much to my surprise, by the way...was on 5 backyard hamburger recipes. After 10 years of website marketing during which my sites have held, and sometimes lost, top 10 rankings in the search engines, the very best advice I can offer others is to relentlessly write and distribute articles on at least 4-5 subject areas...the more the better...in addition to the subject(s) of their websites. It is a strategy that almost guarantees search engine ranking success.
