Headlines are used in many ways, but they all serve the same purpose and are important to your goals. Of course there is much more to this than merely making things up on a whim. Those who have the hardest time are people with inexperience or simple lack of knowledge. Your most important groundwork will lie with your education and approach when you are writing headlines. At the end of the day, that's what's going to matter most.

You want to make headlines that are ideal for the specific audience you've geared your content to impact.

You can also be controversial with your headline by saying something that goes against the "prevailing wisdom". You'll find that audiences love these kinds of headlines and titles.

Just don't do it if you can't find a way to make it work with an edge or a little bit of a kick to get your audience prepared to click in the first place. It's kind of like the cover of a book, while you can't judge them all by the cover, the cover gives a good hint about what information the book holds.

Your readers will want to find out what's going on and be much more inclined to read. But always make sure that the controversy you stir doesn't threaten your credibility. The sooner you start working these tips into your headlines the faster you'll be able to enjoy the rewards. The bottom line is that compelling headlines are better business.
