The Benefits Of Self Publishing

By Nicholas Lancaster

The best way to publish your book might be through self publishing. You may not be aware of it, but self publishing actually has several advantages.

With self publishing, the most important thing to remember is that it will be firmly in control of your book. If there is someone else paying you to publish your book, then a lot of decisions can be made regarding the cover, editing of the manuscript, and the title and the marketing that will impact not only how well your book will sell, but also how the reading public will receive your book.

Unlike traditional publishing, self publishing is considered as faster. It could take you years to find a publisher that is interested in buying your work and more time before you settle on a contract. Are you willing to wait that long?

Self publishing also allows you to retain all the profits from your endeavor. While you may have to put some money up front (depending on the method you use to self publish your book) you will not have to wait for months or years to see income as a result. Most publishers only pay royalties once or twice a year and then those royalties are only a small percentage of the book price. Once you have covered any publication costs, then everything you earn is pure profit when you self publish your book.

Through self publishing, you will be offered an opportunity to break into print that might not be otherwise available and this is one fact you can't overlook. The simple fact is that traditional publishing is highly competitive and many worthwhile manuscripts (and authors) cannot find a publishing home although there may well be an eager and receptive audience for that book.

But self publishing may not be for everyone and this is something you should take note of. You should continue to work on your book and perhaps ask for the assistance of a group of critique or even a professional editor if you are struggling with your writing and voice or if your manuscript still needs polishing. A costly mistake would be self publishing a book that is not yet ready for publication. But you should at least consider self publishing your book if your manuscript has been polished and is well received by several critical readers.

Thanks to modern technology, self publishing is easier and less expensive than it has ever been before and it also offers you the advantages of complete control, faster publication, as well as higher profits. Your big break as a writer could be self publishing.
