Basic Facts Relating To Sustainable Digital Printing

By Lana Bray

Digital printing is a form of image creation that continues to increase in popularity over time. Just like in the conventional methods, image creation can be done on a variety of media using inkjet or laser printers. When dealing with large volumes of work, the cost can be quite tremendous. Sustainable digital printing does not use the plates required in other forms and is therefore a lot cheaper.

The sustainable form allows for image creation on demand. This can be achieved in a short period of time and it is fairly easy to make modifications so as to meet personal needs. Plans are underway to incorporate the advances in technology in image production. Consequently, users will be able to get offset printer services particularly in mass production.

The traditional forms of image production comprise five major types. These include recess, relief, digital, stencil and planographic or offset lithography. Offset lithography refers to the transfer of images from plates to papers through intermediates. Relief image production incorporates technologies known as flexography and letterpress. The photographic type utilizes flexible plates that are created from rubber.

Although plates are not needed in this technique this may be a big disadvantage in the end. The main downside is the fact that the finesse in the final image is frequently lost. Materials are used in image production include, among others, marble, canvas, metal and pho papers. The materials are used for deposition of various colours of toner or pigments. The main disadvantage is that the toner does not adequately penetrate the medium and only forms a thin film on it.

Artists have the option of linking their computers directly with the printer. This is what is commonly referred to as fine art digital ink jet printing. It has a huge advantage in that artists have the ability to customize the final output to fit their preferences. The other strength of this method is that various outputs are produced and these are either are finished or require some form of modification. The main disadvantage compared to offset printer services is that mass production is more expensive.

Advances in technology have led to the discovery of laser and light sensitive paper. This paper allows for images to be created using what is known as photographic developer processing. It has a huge advantage in that it allows for continuity of tone in the images and greater details can be shown. Lenses are not used here and as a result, there is very minimal distortion of edges.

Pre-treatment of fabrics is one of methods that characterize many image production techniques. Urea is one of the commonly used chemicals. Urea is frequently added to paste so as to create more vivid colours. Its main undoing is the fact that it results in production of carbon dioxide as the fabrics are taken through steaming. Sustainable methods have replaced urea with a special kind of foam that produces less carbon dioxide hence causes less pollution.

Digital printing is applied in many areas including desktop publishing, advertising, print on demand and fine art. Variable data printing employs the use of print files which are data based to personalize large amounts of printed material. Photographs can be modified in terms of colour and retouch. Based on the pros and cons of various techniques, sustainable digital printing can be obtained.
