The Grave Issue Behind SOPA And PIPA

By Anne Weaver

On January 18, 2012, several Internet companies, including the likes of Google, Wikipedia, Mozilla, Twitter, Wordpress, Tumblr and Reddit staged a black out campaign online. What was the main agenda for tuning out of their usual colourful shades in favour of the black hue? Their actions were simply a testament to their sturdy objection against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA). Existing controversies concerning the usage of the Web have ushered the online community into a pit of chaos and confusion.

PIPA and SOPA supporters posit that the anti-piracy theme of these legislative acts is enough to cleanse the Internet in a meticulous and austere fashion. Purposely designed to combat infringement, SOPA and PIPA possess predefined regulations and provisions that are hostile to any deed of piracy.

In contrast to the belief of SOPA and PIPA supporters, critics perceive the anti-piracy legislation as a deplorable tactic to control the interaction between the Internet and online user. The contemptible concept behind SOPA and PIPA, as believed by analysts, introduces the idea of unlawful and perilous censorship of the Web and the ban on the operation of rogue and piracy-friendly Internet companies and websites based in USA and situated across international borders.

The formulation of SOPA and PIPA, if brought out of the controversial setting, only brings to attention a more significant issue that needs to be solved: the rise of online piracy. The online community along with the rest of the world must not forget that online piracy is a major danger that continues to haunt and obstruct the growth of online enterprises all over the world.

What is the pragmatic solution to this severe issue? It's simply to abolish the root of the problem. The online community, including the private lone users and the online business entities, must strive hard to produce unique and innovative web content like SEO-oriented articles and Web Designs, etc. When this anti-piracy approach takes effect, it's safe to conclude that the integrity of the Internet is preserved.
