Things To Expect At A Book Signing

By Erin Song

For an author, one of the most thrilling moments is when they are invited to participate in a book signing. Many writers would often consider this as the stamp of approval that they need especially with their first book.

Most bookstores see a book signing as a means of increasing foot traffic and promoting a sense of connectedness with the writing community. Most bookstores agree to the idea of providing space, time, as well as promotion for a book signing.

From the perspective of a writer, this promotion should be like a gold mine. Notices will that will announce the book signing will often be posted by bookstore owners and most will provide announcements in regional newspapers that are designed to promote the book signing.

Don't forget your favorite pen and comfortable shoes. Then enjoy your moment in the sun.

However, unless you are a well-established author there are a few things that you should not expect from a book signing.

It's likely there's no waiting line. Don't expect a significant amount of books to be sold. No writer's cramp.

In fact, the result of a book signing will most likely be a few friends, family, and an assortment of curious others who have come so that you can personally sign their purchased copy of the book.

If that's all there is to it, why bother doing it then?

Well, primarily because as a writer you should consider yourself a 'word farmer'. What I mean by that is a book signing can be a wonderful time to visit with the general public about your book, its subject matter and why you chose to write the book and be willing to wait to see the seed sprout.

There are many cases in which patrons who do not purchase your book may return to purchase it at a later date thanks to their positive contacts.

When it comes to a book signing, this isn't about 'hawking your wares' but rather it's about being an ambassador for the craft of writing and good will.

If you have been invited to participate in a book signing, keep an eye toward the long-term goals you have in writing and accept the invitation with good grace. A book signing is simply one small step toward your ultimate destination, enjoy the step, but don't make too much fuss over it.

There is some form of ego in every writer, but a book signing isn't a good place to don a prima donna persona. One thing you should remember is that the people who came to see you would want to leave with something positive to consider and not an author to avoid.
