How Screenplay Coverage Can Help Writers

By Bernadette Mendoza

Critical feedback is the most rewarding part of a screenplay coverage whether it is coming from another writer or even a professional in the film industry. An assistant or an intern is normally the person the first person to read a script and is in charge of the script's coverage. This is part of a process to sort out the projects with potential from the ones that the studio is not interested in.

The purpose of script coverage is to inform studio executives and producers whether a script is a fit for their production company. They do not usually have time in their busy schedule to sort through every script that comes in, so they get a one or two page summary from their intern along with the feedback for that script. Coverage is consists of a categories such as plot, dialogue, characters, graded on a number scale. Projects that grade well usually get passed on and continue as contenders, bad projects are usually given back to the writers to work on or the studio will pass.

Feedback is usually done by someone working within the development department of a production company. In smaller companies it many go directly to the producer, or the director of development, though it is common that scripts are first screened by their assistants and interns. They usually grade stories on dialogue, plot, on a number scale. They will summarize the project and pass it on to their superiors.

Writers improve by taking the feedback seriously. It is meant as a tool to inform a writer how a studio viewed the script and what they thought could be improved. A script that scored well but needed work will usually be looked at once more by the same studio. A smart agent will usually forward positive coverage to other studios as a way to entice other companies and garner interest in a film.

Feedback is crucial for a writer who is in the business to sell their screenplay. Negative feedback usually means that a screenplay does not get past the readers or assistants because of the amount of work it requires. A studio can pass on a screenplay with good feedback. Sometimes a script will not be a fit for what the company is looking to produce.

A common problem with screenplays is that they are not well presented to their intended audiences. Production companies often take on scripts with very specific audiences or a market in mind, because they know how to market it and how to target a certain demographic. Sometimes a screenplay is written with no specific market in mind. A high concept script like a thriller or action genre usually attracts large audiences because it appeal to a large demographic.

Screenplay coverage is usually done by someone in the film industry with an interest in screenwriting and development. It is used as a tool to quickly inform a producer of the potential of a screenplay and whether or not it would be a good match for their company. It can be informative to a writer to see how a script is received and how it can be improved.
