Writing a Descriptive Essay

During your study at a university, there are many types of writing projects that you can be assigned to. Some of them are designed to reveal your point of view on the subject matter, some of them are designed to check your understanding of the subject, and some of them are designed to teach you to describe events, people, places or other things.

Trying to convey his view and understanding of the world to the reader is what every writer of fiction. Trying to imagine the events or people that he is reading about is what every reader is doing. Writing descriptive essays can help you learn the technique of descriptive writing.

Descriptive essays follow the common rules for essay writing, with a few exceptions. In descriptive essays, the main point is to illustrate events, people, subjects, or things to such extent so that the reader will be able to imagine the description that you are trying to convey. Before you start writing this type of essay you should pick a specific topic. Whether you would like to start writing about events or portray a person you should always understand why the subject of your description is important.

You must realize the description should not only portray the subject, it must also convey the perception of the environment that surrounds this particular subject. There are certain things that should clearly be stated and these include features such as location of the subject, your association with the object of the description, and the unique and distinctive features of the environment. It is important however to remember that whatever you describe you must create interesting, appealing and attracting text, where most of the distinctive features of the subject should be emphasized and stressed. Besides trying to be meticulous to the details and specific features of the surroundings, you also need to avoid generalization as much as possible.

The descriptive essay is unique from other essay writing styles, but it shares one important element in common with other writing assignments - clear, coherent and logical structure. You might certainly start with generalities, an indispensable prerequisite of the introduction, yet you should be more specific in your text. Conclusions regarding the main points is what the body of the essay should contain.

These are just some tips that will be helpful in learning how to complete this type of essay but by following these important rules, you will be able to complete an essay that will meet the criteria that's been set by most universities and current colleges.
