Come On Now, What's Stopping You From Writing A Novel?

By Edward French

Writing a novel is one of those many things in life that are easier said than done, and we can attest to this. You are not alone when you make this discovery, as many novice writers and even published authors find themselves in the very same predicament. Perhaps one of the most difficult things may be trying to discover who, what, where, when, why and how you are going to develop the next "Pulitzer Prize Winning" fiction book. This article will provide you with a number of thoughts and ideas which should make your task not quite so difficult and much more enjoyable.

The triumphant success or the abject failure of your tome may likely be determined by one thing, and it sounds similar to the protagonist of a Winston Groom novel -- in case you haven't guessed it by now, the word is GUMPTION. A good attitude would be looking at your book as something you have always wanted to do, not necessarily as the one thing which will propel you from rags to riches.

To properly inculcate the right mindset within you, it might be worthwhile reviewing some of the figures pertaining towards book publishing in the United States. You should know that approximately 162,000 books are published a year. Please don't let the statistics deter you from your writing. Come on now, that's 162,000 different titles, 162,000 different books, and perhaps one of those books would be YOURS! In other words, you may well be the next "Best Selling Author" just be realistic about the reasons you are writing and the expectations you have for your writing. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it, cliche as it may sound.

You should be imbued with the proper mindset to be a writer -- but now that we've established that, on to the next part, which is the subject of your novel.

Obviously, you already have an idea or thoughts on what you want to write about. If this is your first time to write a novel, it would be a good idea for you to stick to something that you have a degree of conversance with, something you love to write about. Writing about the things in life you are most interested in would decrease the chances of bailing out due to boredom, or if you decide to push forward, it could reduce the time it takes to complete and the degree of difficulty in your writing.

One of the things that ties directly in with the subject of your book, will be the style of writing you elect to use. Let us assume your day job is as a police officer, and because of your experience in the trade, you have become a fan of murder mysteries; you're a regular "Arthur Conan Doyle" and "Agatha Christie" fan. What you want to do now is to go beyond Mr. Doyle and Ms. Christie and read as many murder mystery books as you can at your local library. Read every book and while reading take notes about the style of the authors writing. You will soon begin to recognize the style that fits you the best.

As we assume you already know by now, a whole lot of other things can make writing a book challenging, but we are bound by space constraints so we cannot quite touch on these things yet. But if you are writing with the right frame of mind, writing about something you are familiar with or something that stokes your passion and writing with your own personal tone of voice and style, we just might see you in the list of "best sellers" with the likes of "Stephen King" and "Stephenie Meyer"!
