Writing Short Articles -- A Definitive...And Short Guide

By Dana McLean

Short article writing is as not as difficult as you think. If you know exactly what you are supposed to do, it is not hard at all. Remember the key to successful article writing -- catching the attention of your readers in any way, shape or form. You must make them want to read what you wrote. Take note of the following tips when writing your article, and we promise you this will not be too long -- short, in fact.

What is in it for Your Readers?

Enthrall your readers from the get-go. The very thing you want your readers to do at first glance is to pay attention to your article and realize the benefits of reading it. Writing compelling titles is an art itself. In the title you are writing, after all, the proverbial sizzle, rather than the steak. Your goal is to create a title that will stand on its own and be so attractive it would figuratively paralyze your readers. Do not be afraid to be outrageous even. Use the first few sentences or the first paragraph to let your readers know about how your article can solve their problems or change their lives for the better. It must be formatted in such a way that when your readers scan your article, it would be viewed as a light, easy and interesting reading. What else can you do to make an easy-to-read article? Bullets, numbered lists ("Letterman lists" because of the common Top Ten format) and steps are useful tools.

Talk to your reader. Think of what your purpose is in writing the article and fine-tune your writing specific to what your target audience wants. Make sure that your articles will be understood by varied audience regardless of their age, educational background or race. Connect to your reader as a friend, giving him an advice. Write as if you were giving advice rather than lecturing the readers.

You and Your Topics

Outline them. You can write those articles faster if you have an outline prepared in advance. Determine the number of paragraphs you would like your article to have, your outline headings and sub points for each heading. There must be no disparity between the outline headings and the main topic of your article, instead they should be congruent to the main topic. Also make sure that the sub-points are related to the main talking points and the main heading of the article itself -- consistency is the key.

Brevity is the soul of an interesting article, but include enough information to make it compendious. Do not write lengthy paragraphs that would bore your reader. Shorter paragraphs are more readable. Examples must be clear and concise and not at all long-winded. And going back to the earlier point about jargon, keep your sentences simple and use words that the average reader would recognize. Use the simplest words. Avoid using words which are very technical except when it is really necessary. Use words of direct and powerful actions and expressions. Use active voice in writing sentences. This would be more positive in impression. Do not fluff up your article with superfluous or unnecessary words.

Attempt to write a pithy article. It should be informative and should be applicable to everyday life. Do your research thoroughly so that you can convince your readers that you are indeed an expert in the topic, a potential problem solver. Only use brief examples throughout the course of your article, and avoid the usage of any long-winding examples, quotes, anecdotes or testimonials. You want your readers to understand what they are reading but at the same time you want to have an emotional connection with them. Readers would, last but not least, appreciate it if you summarize the information that had been heretofore discussed in the article. This allows them to connect with you as a writer and as an individual.
